The Braslav Lakes National Park was set up in 1995 to conserve such a unique nature corner as Braslav district and it was the second National Park in Belarus after Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

National parks belong to a special category of the nature reserves. They are set up to conserve the animals and valuable nature complexes. They are used for scientific, cultural, educational purposes and for rational tourism. The park occupies the territory of 71.5 thousand hectares or more than a third of the Braslav administrative district. Its core consists of the most picturesque and valuable localities around Braslav. The park administration is located in Braslav. From north to south the park stretches for 56 km, its width fluctuates from 7 to 29 km. There are 60 lakes occupying 17 % of the territory in the Park. The biggest lakes are, Drivyaty, Snudy, Strusovo, Boguinskoye. Volos Yuzhny, the deepest lake (40.4 m) is distinguished by very pure, transparent and always cold water. Volos Yuzhny is the only lake in Belarus where relict Crustacea of the ice age can still be found.

The forests occupy 46% of the park and have typical oak and fur tree sub-zone of the mixed forests. Several large forestlands can be distinguished: "Boguinsky" , "Belmont" forest, "Boruny" forest, "Druyskaya dacha" forest, "Ratsky" pine forest. The modern fauna is represented by species typical to mixed forests of middle Europe. The lakes are inhabited by 29 species of fish including such valuable species as blackhead, zander, pike, burbot. There are 189 bird species including 45 rare and disappearing. Big animal species inhabiting the park are an elk, a bear, a roe, a wolf, a lynx. The botanists found 500 species of flora 20 of them are rare for Belarus. The park includes a number of interesting nature monuments. They are vivid forms of the ice age relief, big stones, remarkable islands, biological groups of rare trees. There are also different historical and cultural monuments such as human settlements of different ages, burial mounds, cult constructions Objectives.

The objectives of the Braslav Lakes National Park are:
Conservation of the natural complex of Braslav lakes group, its unique ice age landscape, genetic fund of plant and animal world typical for Belorussian Poozerye;
Organization of environmental education of the population;
Conservation of cultural heritage;
Organization of recreation and tourist activities.

Functional zones.
Depending on its natural, scientific, recreational, historical and cultural value and for the rational use and protection of the natural complexes the borders of functional zones of the National Park has been identified.
Nature reserve zone - 3452 ha (4.9%). It is identified in the most valuable and the least loaded part of Boguinsky forest land in order to conserve untouched typical and unique ecosystems, genetic fund of plant and animal world. The conservation mode here is as for the requirements for nature reserves. Regulated usage zone - 27746 ha (39%). It is the subject for study, restoration, development and sustainability of the ecosystems undisturbed by human economic activities.

Recreation zone - 12103 ha (17,0%). It is meant for the location of recreation and tourist facilities necessary for the population recreation, organization of cultural activities.

Economic zone - 25815 ha (36,3%). It is meant for the location of the facilities for servicing park's visitors and administration, recreation and living buildings.

Relief.
The park is a unique lake and forest nook of Belarus. The relief here was shaped in the result of the last ice shelf . The Braslav upland is one of the most unique natural complexes in Belarus. The combination of chains, hills, lakes, wetlands and rivers makes these territory very picturesque. In the park there are a lot of huge stones (up to 10 m long), which are remarkable in geological and historical respects.

Climate.
Moderate-continental with soft and humid winter and warm summer. The amount of precipitation is 560-600 mm per year, 70 % is from Aril to October. The optimal humidity during vegetation period is 70% on average, and the lowest humidity is in May-June.

Soils.
The Braslav upland is characterized by sod-podzol more rarely sandy loam soils. On the territory of Disnenskaya lowland the soils are a complicated and mosaic combination of mineral, relatively rich organic soils and vast areas of upper, transitional and lower bogs.
